There are some locals who fish the lake for crappie but few other people go there to crappie fish. The lake has the clearest water of any lake in Alabama, it is VERY deep and very clear with many rock bluffs.
I do on occasion when the river is in bad shape. I have had moderate success. The best fishing I have found is up on the North end of the lake around Misty Harbor. It's a lot more shallow up on that end. I've caught a few in Lick creek, Coon creek, Rock creek and White oak. The holes are so far apart I spend more in gas than it's worth to go. Give it a shot, you could be better at it than me. You might catch a bunch.
FISHED SMITH IN LATE 80'S MID 90'S GREAT SOME DAYS NOT SO GOOD OTHER DAYS. YOU HAD TO HAVE SPECIAL HOLES AND
FISH VERY OFTEN TO KEEP UP WITH MOVEMENT. FISHED 2 DAYS IN JAN WITH NO CRAPPIE BUT 5 SMALL BASS. CHECKED 20-25
OLD CRAPPIE HOLES WITH NO CRAPPIE PLENTY OF COVER. NORTH END OF LAKE MISTY HARBOR TO GOAT ISLAND.
Thanks for the replies. I fish here a lot but never for crappie. I read somewhere that Smith was the number 3 crappie lake in AL. Will have to try next time down. Rock Creek and Lick are close by.were you jig fishing or live bait, might be good to know that.
