Depends on what you want to do other than fish.

Anyone have any input, good or bad? I'm flexible, but wanted to stay near the north end of the state. Any input would be appreciated.

If you want to go to casino's also, then by all means that should be fine. If your coming just to fish, then staying along 55 opens you to much easier drives to Arkabutla, Sardis and Enid. Hotels in Southaven or Hernando are nice if you are just fishing Arkabutla and maybe want to go to Memphis. If you want to fish the others, Senatobia, Sardis or Batesville might be better.
