Thinking about coming up in August for a week to try a new area and get away from the Florida heat. Normally I spider rig but not sure what technique will work there. Any suggestions on how to fish the lake would be greatly appreciated.

You can pretty well chose your style on Patoka. I spider rig and pull cranks and swim or dip jigs early. You can find about any structure that you favor from weeds to stumps, creek channels to flats, river to open lake. Just review our regs and limit on number of rods/hooks in use. There may be a new size and possession limit in place as well by August including a change for bluegill. Also be aware that August can and does have days that can be miserable hot and humid. You most likely will have to fish areas away for the big boats and skiers too.
People from Southern Indiana don't usually have much trouble with Florida heat because we are used to similar heat and humidity. Last time I was in Florida it was 94 with high humidity and it was hotter at home and just as humid. But it's probably more consistently hot there, so just check the forecast before you hit the road.
Ok. May have to make it toward the end of Sept. Any suggestions for that time of year?
Crappie USA Classic is the 2nd weekend of October, so it will be a busy place for a few weeks prior. The week after Labor Day would be a nice time to be out there. Whaler summed it up, it has something to offer everyone.
Right now I think I could go for some of that heat and humidity. We all need to gather at Patoka the first 40 degree day to celebrate and fish.
