I;m in C Fl. on a small lake, we have native weeds year round to the depth of 12 ft. after that the bottom is barren, thus the middle has no cover and the max depth is 17 ft. I can't see any sense in throwing it in a pile of weeds, but would 17 ft be too deep?
You have 2 things that can help you in a lake like that....sometimes with a thermocline the fish will not use deep cover in the summer, BUT, wood cover can attract certain types of algae that will give off oxygen...also in lakes that have huge expanses of weeds, they will keep the water highly oxygenated in summer allowing fish to stay deeper....In the winter, if the vegetation starts to die, it uses up oxygen and the fish will move deep again.
IMHO, you will be fine adding deep cover...it will come into play during different seasons, no matter what!
Weeds don't die off here in the winter, they keep growing, even the cypress trees are full of buds and a lot if stuff is blooming already...
Do you catch fish out in that basin? Do you see them out there on electronics? Up here, we have plenty of brush at the 17-25' depths, but we don't have the weeds to keep fish cool in summer. Lots of times the thermocline will be above the brushpiles, so fish don't really go down there to spend much time, but often they will suspend over that brushpile. In winter it might be just reversed and they stay down there a lot, but maybe they drift straight up over the pile to wait for shad to come through, or to feel some warmth from the sun. Somewhere that you know there are lots of fish, put a pile out maybe 20-30' out from the weeds....who knows, you may have your own secret spot after a few weeks.
