Caney Lake 1-16-15

Well, I decided to run up to Caney this morning after Diane left to go wrangle 24 kindergarteners for the day. Beautiful morning with fog early and a lot of boats on the lake. 26 degrees when I arrived at the lake at 7:30. I had no idea where to fish so I found the other boats about 8:00 AM and got set up.

There were shad and fish all over the depth finder between 37 and 40 feet. But, after 5.5 hours I had only 2 crappie in the livewell. One was about 10 inches and the other weighed 1.5 lbs. I also caught 2 small barfish. I must have tried 15 different jig color combinations.


It didn't look like anybody else was doing much better, at least out of the boats close enough for me to see. I did talk to one gentleman who told me that he and a buddy caught 36 yesterday. He wasn't catching anything today either. I over heard another man say that it was still a little early yet.

Nice post, tough fishing everywhere seems like right now.

I don't know, my brother a one of his friends have been catching 2 limits every day that he has gone, which is 3 or 4 days this last week, at Lake of the Pines. But, it is jut too far for me. I can't justify spending that much money to fish.

Thanks for the report Pastor. I had heard they were biting a couple days ago but I guess that's just the way it is sometimes.

Pastor I was it there yesterday and caught 25 good ones. You need to find the old creek bed it's runs about 50 yards from where all the boats are stacked up. You'll know you found it when the water drops from 36 FOW to 40. Hope you can get on them soo.

There was a good bite on Wednesday and Thursday. Little slower on Friday. Made my first trip to Caney on Saturday and had 19 when the wind got bad. Went back and got 13 today and went home.

A friend had 31 on Saturday and 40 today.

Was told it is still early.

What baits? Shiners or jigs? Fished jigs all weekend at Caney. Lot of barfish and about 6 decent crappie.

Double silver rainbow did the trick for me.

Shiners and jigs, heard the double silver rainbow was good. I used a Truman and shiners.
