Im thinking of upgrading to a DI unit...maybe the new helix models.
Im planning on using on my trolling motor. Would i need to purchase the actual trolling motor transducer or would the one in the box work ok?

you can get an adapter kit to use the regular TD for about $20 I have one and it works just fine. Just remember that when you turn you'll get some blurring in the pics.
I would go with the made for the trolling motor transducer (XTM-9-DI-25-T).
Two reasons for this: first is that it is made to fit the trolling motor and will not hang on weeds and get damaged as easily as an adapted transom mount transducer would. Secondly is that it is built with an additional RF shield which will help if your trolling motor is radiating RF energy (trolling motor interference).
Make use of the Transducer Exchange Program when you receive your new HELIX 5 DI model unit (don’t open any bagged items until you talk to them!).

The exchange program is through humminbird. All you have to do is ship your unopened transducer bag back to humminbird and let them know what transducer you are wanting. You pay shipping that is all.

You are welcome. I exchanged my transducer back in the summer it takes a few days for the whole process to take place but worth the wait. You won't have to worry as much about the transducer hang down so low it gets broke off.

Yeah there is an orange insert in the box for the Helix that explains the exchange program. It just says you include your new unassembled transducer and mounting hardware along with name, address, phone #, and email address. Also states to expect 8-10 business days for exchange.
The cost may vary by which transducer you are exchanging for and with. i would always call the Humminbird Customer Service folks (1-800-633-1468) to set this up first so there are no surprises.
