Anyone use electric anchor winches? What brand? Pros and cons?
I've got my eye on Minn Kota Deck Hand 25s. I use 18lb anchors, so the 25 should cover it. I'll have one at the front and one in back.
We drop anchor a lot durning normal fishing. We had hand cranks on the last boat. My 5 year old daughter can't crank an anchor, which made anchors a pain, but I'm sure she can push a button. That will make my life easier when it's just her and I out on the water.
Used BPS 25 lbs with 20 lb anchor for 3 months. Worked good but motor gave out. Wireless remote was awesome. Returned and got MK 40 with 30 lbs anchor. Really like it better. Takes up twice the space though. No wireless remote but I did run second wired switch to front of boat. Use a lot with no problems. Even had kid hit switch by accident while running wide open. No damage to motor at all. I use mine a lot in conjunction with ipilot to fish brush piles. The motor is geared for large anchors as the 20 would not activate it for me.
I have two biological anchor winches: a 13 yr old, and a 15 yr old!
If I had to use a anchor, I would have an anchor winch, after having back surgery, It kills my back to pull on anything!
I was thinking that one on the back of the boat might help me and my lightweight, shallow draft jon boat to stay on a spot. I'm thinking that right before I get to the waypoint, drop the back anchor and use the trolling motor as usual, but hopefully much less (if that makes any sense at all). Hopefully, it would keep the boat from blowing around as much. My boat doesn't sit nearly as still in the water as yours.
You are wanting to use it kinda like a shallow water pole......Jon boats are aggravating in the wind...especially the flat bottom ones.
I always liked the idea of an automatic anchor for the pontoon, especially for those windy days. I just never could justify the cost.
