After years of bass fishing I've decided to try crappie fishing. I've been making my own soft plastic baits for almost a year now and just want to see what everybody is using for the slabs. Any input on baits and rigging techniques would be appreciated.
Welcome to the board. I don't make my soft lures, as the cost is as of now a bit high. But I do tie my own jigs. I wont say that I am a great tier but caught some stripped bass this fall on some of mine. I know that at least four of the fellers do pour there own.
Welcome to the wonderful world of crappie fishing. My personal preference is minnows, they have served me well. If jigs are the way you want to go, deer hair jigs w/ 1/32oz #4hook combo. Colors are up to the individual but i like chartreuse / blaze orange head. Ive recently had good luck on the BGBS / blue ice. Good luck w/ the slabs.

Welcome. I've had good success on a variety of BGBS, but Cajun cricket is my go-to color. I also favor the Charley Brewer crappie sliders in junebug/chartreuse. I use a few other colors, but those are my best. Tap will give you further details, he's the crappie master around these parts.

Go over to the Jig Tying forum. Plastics section on there. Look through some of the threads. Quite a few of the fellows pour their own plastics and some really awesome baits.

Fish the same areas you bass fished only with crappie baits, Roadrunners,grubs,crappie tube,crappie jigs!!!! 4-6 lb test,1/16 oz,1/8 oz,3/16 oz baits!!!! Slow down fish the areas and find the sweet spot!! Add brush piles and cover!! Good luck!!! You will be hooked!!! Bass will chase the bait!! Crappie you have to put the bait on their nose to get them to bite!!!
I bought some 1/32, 1/16, and 1/8 jig heads but find myself catching crappie in the open waters vs the brush piles and cover.
