Black River (again!)
Went back to the Black River today. The nature was beautiful today. First I saw a pack of feral hogs on the road the landing is on. Then at the landing there was a flock of 15-20 hen turkeys. The river was absolutely beautiful today, slick as glass and not one other boat out there. For 5 hours the only sound I heard was the occasional bird. I fished the Kelley cove and Larkins cove. Pretty much identical to yesterday. Caught another big pickerel (my pb), a blackfish, a gigantic redbreast, and about 20 crappie. Kept a mess for the fryer, threw most of them back (lots of little ones). The majority of the crappie I caught in the river this weekend were unusually small, lots of 8 and 9 inch fish. I only keep them 10" and up. I did manage one 12" and one 13" though. Guess it's just a year class thing. Didn't have my camera, but when I get home I'll take some pics of the fish and attach them to this post. And like I said in my last post, if you'll learn how to deal with the "Y" bones in the pickerel you'll be glad you did! Alright, pics to come in an hour or two.
Method: Long lining
Bait: Chartreuse Gulp! 1" minnows, black/chartreuse and black/blue Strike King tubes, shiners
Water depth: 9-14 feet
Bait depth: 5-7 feet

The Pickerel must have been fun on light tackle.
Next time rotate your pictures my neck is sore from looking. JK

Tried to rotate, I think the file size is too big and it just won't cooperate. Sorry:dono But yeah, I just knew I had a catfish on with that pickerel. Caught one Saturday that was decent, but that one there probably went 4 lbs. Thanks for the reply!

Congrat's on a good catch. We caught a pickerel on Harris Lake last Spring and what a mouth on that fish.

LOL. Your daughter's face in the fish picture reminded me of my granddaughter's when her cousin was filleting a fish. She is 14 now, so I had to dig to find this. Guess most girls that age have the same reaction.
Have not been on a black water river in a long time. Used to catch redbreast on the Edisto here in SC. wanted to fish the Little Pee Dee too, but never have.
