I have a 14ft flatbottom that I fish out of and I'm going to add a depth finder to it. So would it be worth to add one with side imaging like 899 or would it be more beneficial to add a down imaging like 859. Thanks

2d will show a "cartoon like" image of stuff under the boat ...
DI will show a "picture like" image of stuff under the boat and out to the sides a few feet ...
SI will show a "picture like" image of stuff under the boat, out to the sides 100+ feet, and which side of the boat ...
2d and DI advantage is seeing what's under the boat ...
SI advantage is finding new stuff to fish way out to the sides of the boat ...

The 899 is a good sonar. I have one and you can use the SI and DI at the same time to help you distinguish bottom features. I bought the 899 with the original transducer that is not HD and bought the new HD transducer for only $150 from a site on the web. I mounted the HD transducer on the back of my boat and the original transducer on my front trolling motor and I switch from front to back as needed.
If you do buy the 899 and want the HD transducer instead of the original you can send the unopened bag with the transducer to Humminbird and they will send you the HD transducer for $90. As you see it is not much more to pay ($60) to be able to keep both transducers!!
Trust me, you will be forever thankful for the side imaging as it shows you what is next to boat as well as whats under it. This saves loads of time in searching for structure and drop offs!!!
Kickingback is on the money!

X2!
You can either have both transducer cables close to your unit and plug in the one you want to use or you can buy one of the Humminbird splitter cables for cheap. This way you can leave them both hooked up and switch as needed.

Its all been said, good luck and have fun
The HB AS SIDB Y cable is a Y splitter cable that disconnects the 2d piezo in one xducer and in its place wires in the 2d piezo in the second xducer ...the AS SIDB Y cable would, in effect allow SI from one xducer and only 2d from the second xducer ...
To fully utilize all piezoe's in 2 separate xducers connected to one head unit would require the HB TS3 switch ...

yep... what they said?
