Hi, just a quick question, I have been kayak fishing for a little bit, I am thinking about adding a trolling motor to cover more distance. I know I need to register it, but I am thinking about testing it first to make sure it work well. My question is that do i need to register it before I added a trolling motor? or I have time to try it out first to see if that is the way I want to go? also adding a trolling motor do i need to have it inspected? Just FYI for any people that have the same question. I called the KDWPT. here is the answer
1) Yes , it nee to be register before it hit the water, no testing on public water.
2) You need to unregister it if you don't think it is the way you want to go. fee are non refundable.
3) if you don't unregister it, you will be hit by property tax every year.
I would try to find a private pond to try it out on before I got into potential hassle of having to unregister it. Jmo
Having a trolling motor on a yak would have some advantages but a key disadvantage that I see is the stealth that you are able to have using a paddle.
How do I "find" private pond?
Depending on where you live it shouldnt be hard to find one. Ask the peoperty owner for permissionan and politelyexplain that you just want to test your kayak out with the TM, an the will likely allow you to test it, provided they havent had a bad experience with strangers on their property.
