Prairie Chicken
Managed to get out twice this week for some chicken hunting. First day was Wednesday morning and it decided to rain first thing in the morning so me and the dog sat in the car and waited out the rain for awhile then started walking. While walking we managed to flush up 2 chickens out of range. This morning found my son, my dog, and me hunting in much better weather. Started off in the same field that I flushed the two the other morning. Walked through the field finally seen one get up out of range, walked that way and the dog was work his way back to me and one flushed between us; 2 shots and the chicken came down. Finished walking out that field and we head to a field I couldn't get to the other day. First time walking this field so had little expectations other than it looked like good chicken habitat. Walked back through the field from the car and we seen 2 get up about 250 yards out, worked the are those 2 came from and didn't find anymore. Went and took a break at a pond while the dog cooled off and got a drink the the dog went on point and flushed up a pheasant. It was nice seeing a pheasant again. Working our way back to the car and seen a covey of about 15-20 prairie chickens get up about 400 yards out to our side, but decided the dog was getting tired and so was my son so we just kept heading to the car. Talked to a buddy and he said he's interested in getting out and trying to get his first chicken so hopefully we'll get out in the next couple of weeks and get him a bird.

Nice pics and thanks for sharing! Brings back fond memories of my setter (R.I.P. Abby).

Sounds like you have a good population on that ground hoping the fact that we have had some rain will make a better than average upland year.

Haven't hunted them in a few years, but want one for the wall. May have to get out after them again. Seeing a lot of quail this year. May get a shorthair again when we move into a bigger house.
