I recently bought a whole pile of materials from Crazy Angler and they had a clearance on 1/32nd oz jigs on #2 hooks. I bought them for $.75 per doz and am now wondering what how I should tie these? Does anyone else like large hooks? I am going to spin up a few with some of the new stuff I got just to see how they look. I will post them up and let me know what you think.
First one: 15 MM Fl orange cactus chenille pink marabou. This chenille is a little big for such a small head and I have a feeling this jig will sink SLOOOOOW.

Second: Dirty Chicken Crystal Chenille, pink marabou. I think this size chenille will work really good for 32nd oz jigs

Not sure how these will fish, I am guessing they will be slow to sink but I think they will work on big ol slabs! What do you guys think?
Use nothing but big hooks here. Big fish need big hooks. By the way nice looking tie's.
From my view the hook size and type is why they had them on sale. I probably have some kind of like that, have had them for probably 8 years if not longer. No one ask for 1/32 with a #2 hook, at least not in all I have tied except maybe one guy and not sure about that. First Sickle hooks have a bigger gap than regular bend hooks of the same size. I don't get any jig heads under 1/8 with a sickle hook larger than a #2 and maybe a few #1, but have some in some 1/4 oz I have. I mostly use either a #6 or #4 in a 1/32 and #4 is big for the size. I have caught my share of crappie that were 17" or larger and never needed a hook bigger than a #4 Sickle and many caught on one much smaller like on a 1/32 Oz Roadrunner as they have a regular bend hook size #6.
I know there are plenty guys that use the big hooks especially over in Mississippi, but not usually on a 1/32 at least I don't think so. Most of them I think like 1/8 a lot??
Seems to me that you loose less crappie using a Sickle hook, maybe it's the way it's bent, don't know, but know loose less fish with it!
I am pretty impulsive so I couldnt pass up a doz for $.75. I have caught many a crappie on 32nd oz jigs with a #6 and been fine. I figure I will try these ones out or give them to some of my "Jr. Field Testers".
They will still work so wouldn't just throw them out, but also wouldn't buy a bunch that size for myself for sure!
A while back I did a custom order 3/0 sickles with a 1/32 head. So yes, there are some out there that want big gooks and small heads.
On a side note. I really like the new materials I got. I am in serious need of a weekend alone on the lake :) and some storage!
I buy 1/32oz ballhead weedless jigheads from Grousefly ... and specify they have #2 Aberdeen hooks, same as the 1/16oz weedless jigheads I get from him. The reason being so I can use the same size plastic bait on either weight jighead, and still have a good size gap between the hook point and top of the plastic bait body. That was after using the same size jigheads with #4 hooks, over a 5yr period, with the small (1.5") plastic bodied baits ... quite successfully.
I don't throw many "tied" jigs ... but, I would have no qualms tying those on my line, and expect to have fish nail them :ThumbsUp

Agree cp, need bigger hooks for soft plastic baits! Lots of bulk on them.
