I like telescoping poles. I use 2 13-foot, 2-11 foot and 2-10 foot up front. In the back I use regular poles from 8 foot down to 6 foot. For my front poles I like the telescoping poles because they are real limber in the tips to give the lure action. I break them down one twist on the bottom which gives the biggest reduction in length. They are easy to travel that way and they are quick back into action. For long line trolling I don't see a need to buy expensive rods. To me you need a rod that has a light action so the jig moves a lot. I think that helps catch fish. I use to use stiff poles and I noticed I didn't catch as many fish on them as my ultra light or light action poles did. I do buy good quality poles to shoot docks where feel and line watching is everything. Good luck with your selection, Wes
Crappie Max Tightline Rods for trolling. Crappie Max Signature Series for pushing. They are not cheap but they are durable!
Wally Marshall IM6 Trolling Rods....Anything from 8 footers to 18 footers....Like Earl said about the Crappie Max.... They are not cheap but they are durable!...I have had some rods over 8 years now and still fishing with them. I fish some lakes with tons of structure and I need a rod that has back bone and a strong enough tip to withstand the snags and stumps, yet the tip is light enough to detect the light bites. I have abused them to the maximum and the only 3 rods that I have broken were my fault...2 rods I stepped on and the other was from me snatching it too hard out of 100% aggravation of getting hung up....Wally Marshalls are tough!!!
I have an assortment of Wally Marshall, B&M, and Crappie Max. Range from 18 down to 9 ft. All have served me well and none have outperformed the other. If you check the sale boards you can get a good deal on gently used items. Also, I noted that the Crappie Max rods go on sale quite often at BPS. It is a blessing and a curse working 5 minutes from them. Also academy seems to clearance out their products a lot as well.
I also use the Crappie Maxxx signature rods and BGJP's up to 10' and Wally Marshall 14' and 18'. Havent broken one yet! I'm a bargain shopper so I buy what I can when they are on sale. I got a couple of the Wally Marshall's at Academy for $7 each on sale.
I build my own. MXH Panfish blanks. 9',10', 12', and 14' are all graphite. 4' to 6' are glass.
Very stout butt section with an extra soft mid and tip section.
Sorry, they don't make production rods so you would have to order them from a custom builder however.
BnM BGJP for longlining.
I actually just stocked up on some Pinnacle Limit 8ft rods from Grizzly jig to run out back. 60 bucks for a 4 pack of them. Awesome rods. Soft tip and then a good sturdy backbone. Love em.
