Depends on your water clarity as to what colors are best. I know Red and White is a long time bait color, but I just do not use it. Mostly I use Chart/Blue/Chart or several other when stained water, but clear I want Silver/Silver/Blue or again a few others I like that are like that.
It also looks like you cut the tips off the marabou after it was tied? That would be a no no! Also looks like maybe you tied in the stem and all of the feather which I don't do hardly ever. I may use a stem 5 % of the time if it's so thin it wouldn't matter, but 95% of the time I take the feather off the stem and stack that until I get enough, then one cut after I have picked them up and know how much I want to tie in. I will pinch the marabou right where I want to cut it again on the same end that was attached to the stem and cut that off, but never the tips.
Skip, no I didn't cut the ends off the marabou.....just stacked two feathers together and that's the way they came out on this one. It does look like I cut it though now that you mentioned it. Also, yes I didn't tear off the marabou like normal but I was using up some loose feathers that came out of the string when I pulled them out of the sack. They were fairly light on the end so I just went ahead and tied them stem and all. I usually tear off the marabou.
For some reason, the flame red powder paint looks orange to me. Maybe I'll paint some fl. orange heads today to see if there is a difference.
These are going into my retail store. Not a lot of crappie fishermen around here, they all want to chase white bass and suckers in this town. But, I do have a few crappie guys and these would also work well for bluegill and rock bass.
Just don't know if I like this color combo....guess I'll tie some up and see if anyone buys them.
I'm also thinking I need to get a hackle gauge and pay more attention to the length of the hackle. This one looks a little on the large side to me? What do you think?
Even when I buy a pound of marabou it's all strung together. On your Flame Red Powder pint, it's suppose to look close to Orange, but if you want really Orange get some Blaze Orange and then you will see a difference, but Flame Red is never going to really look Red like you were wanting.
Also when you take some marabou out it will be stuck together, just take your first finger and thumb and use your nail on the thumb to rub/scrape the feather between you finger and thumb with the nail doing the work of separating the stuck feathers.
Hackle looks fine - just remember what size hackle a fly calls for is not what a jig calls for and yours looks fine. Only thing I can see is you might want to get a few more wraps of chenille - hackle will tie down even with chenille up near the head of the jig. If you want a red head get the red powder or flourescent red.
Take it out and fish it!!! If the fish like it you'll know it's tied right.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!
Not too much at all. Like it!
