Lacassine Bayou 7/30/2014

What a great day. Nice weather and finally found a way into Lacassine Bayou to replace Teppy's. The new HWY 14 bridge has a state owned road going under it to the water. They just covered the humpy thing with some old asphalt picked up off the highway somewhere and made a rough boat launch. I'm glad I don't have to launch an outboard there, but it might work for real small rigs. It will all be underwater when the bayou is high.

I am glad you caught a few. That can be a tricky bayou to learn. Did you go up or down river? The water is better down river. Man that is my home water. I caught my first fish on that bayou. It has special meaning to me. I am glad they have made a make shift launch. Too bad Jeff Davis Parish doesn't have the casino funds that Calcasieu has and build a nice launch with a bulk head.

Down to the figure eight and back. 10 miles all together. Got to learn some spots. Found one good one and 2 with potential.

Is that Cane Island you paddled too? If so that's a haul. I can hook you up on a few good banks to try between there and the bridge.

What you are calling figure 8 is Cane Island and 4 rivers area. You know its closer to launch at Gary's landing to get there. You cut through the Streeter's canals. Man you could fish one mile canal too.

I was looking at your last picture and thought it was 4 rivers. Watch your Humming Bird you might find one of my brush piles. If you find a large doughnut shaped one its mine. I have about 5 around there. All are out in open water.

Google earth shows a Cane Island, but the first old timer I met on the bayou called the area the "figure eight". If you look at a topo map then you see that's a pretty good name. The fisherman's name was O'Blanc. I think he was from Hays.

People used to camp on a high piece of ground as you come out on the south end, but the Refuge take over shut that down. Used to be real old Indian pot shards could be found.

What's really amazing is how the lower Lacassine has changed since the last map I have which is from the 50's. A lot of the marsh just floated away.

That would be great, but the closer to the bridge the better. I don't intend going to the figure eight often. There was a Holy Spirit pin I had to check. It has been stuck in a tree for 25 years. I wrote a little blog post on it 7 years ago.

As a paddler I checked that way back. Google earth shows 7.65 miles from Gary's to Cane Island and it's 4.44 miles from the bridge. Another draw back is that the first 2 miles would be area I didn't want to fish. I like to have spots near a launch to give breaks from the paddling.

What's all that activity showing on Google earth along Streeters Road in the Mermentau. Looks like the refugee must have a big project. The imagery is 2 years old so it's probably finished by now.

I know the area well. First time I ran a boat I was 7 with my father. I drove from 14 to the north rollers and back. It was a 1975 14/36 Duracraft with a Johnson 6 horse. When we got back to the landing he said its yours you earned it from running a rice cart last year. I was going to tell you about Indian Island. I found my first arrow head there. It was my southern boundary and the railroad bridge was my northern. I could burn over a 6 gallon tank in a day. Thanks for the memories Mermentau. Laccassine was my Hannibal. You can cut thru the duck pond area and knock a couple of miles off that trip.
