My question is can you catch gar and crappie in the same place on the same day?
One of my crappie holes that has been very faith full year after year had gar in it last week. 5 to be exact and only 1 crappie.
Never saw this coming.

We never had much luck fishing bream beds once the gar showed up. If I was a bream( or crappie) I'd get the heck outta Dodge.
Yep.....I would think the gar would run the crappie off
There was a little spot we were fishing one day and we were hammering the sac-a-lait (crappie) then out of nowhere we started seeing big alligator gar ( at least 7 to 8 footers) rolling on the surface and the sac-a-lait shut down. An ole timer told me gar love crappie
we were at pomme de terre a couple yrs ago and stopped at a marina for lunch, a young kid was on the dock crappie fishn. we walked by and asked him if he was doing any good? he said he was killing them till about 5mins ago. we go in for some lunch and 5 mins later he was hollar'n at the top of his voice.....SOMEBODY GET A NET!! we ran to my boat got the net and landed a 48" musky for him! so ya, if a big predator shows up all the little guys are gonna scram!!
You can't crappie fish on Truman and not see gar everywhere you go. Never seems to bother the crappie.
Below the dam at Truman there are crappie and gar in the same areas. And you will catch crappie and snag gar crappie fishing.
Fishing on the upper end of the lake when gar show up it's time to move on. Even worse in my opinion is a pack of otters even the gar leave when they show up. I saw a seven otters in a pack last fall looked like a wolf pack hunting.

never had a problem with the gar, if they are feeding and doing their surface thang, I just cast past them let the bait fall below them and catch the crappie that are feeding on the scraps the gar leave, I think the gar mostly feed on shad and small fish, I don't know for sure, but I have caught the heck out of crappie under gar....
If the gar are up, I've caught crappie below over deep water pulling cranks.
Gar from surface to bottom and no bites to be had.
