Humminbird 898C HD SI
I have posted this on our state forum and decided to through it out here to see if anyone else is having this trouble or is the norm for this unit. The problem I am having is that once I mark a brush pile I can't seem to get it show very much detail. Meaning no very much definition on branches and it doesn't show any fish. I just sent the unit in for Humminbird to look at it and they said it checked out fine. I have made all kinds of adjustments on it and have even had other people look at it as well. We are unable to get it any better than the snapshots below. All are of the same brush pile.
Maybe I'm looking for to much here. I am not happy at all for something that I have spent this kind of money on.

The humminbird DI may be lacking some from other brands. Picture number 2 is not that bad. I did circle the fish in the pile for you. It may be tough to see these on the water, but you can pick them out in an environment where viewing is better. Some guys on here may be able to give you tips to get it as good as it can be. I'll try to see if I can find any DI pics from mine.

Your DI shots are typical (and actually quite good)...for the HB SI units...which do not have a "down pointing" piezo element...but instead renders the DI image from the data received in the "side pointing" SI piezoes...

Here's what I was set on. Chart speed 8, DI enhance: sensitivity 12, contrast 1, and definition low. That was the best setting I felt like. One other thing is Humminbird said to change from fresh water to salt water shallow. That made a little difference as in image 3.

Here's one of the few di pics I have. It is from a 798. It has crappie on vertical structure, and you can see the egg sinker going down to get another fish. Mine don't seem to be any better than yours, but it don't bother me since I rarely use DI. If yours can be helped, there are guru's on here that can help you make it happen. I would start with matching my chart speed with the boat speed. Others may confirm if that is good.

I guess I just didn't do enough research before I bought. I will rely on DI more than the side for winter time crappie and was hoping for better results than this. Maybe I just need to run a true DI on the front of the boat. Well I have a 597 DI, but need a little better unit than that.

CJ those are pretty good off a 898. Like stated the 898 is not going to interpret DI like the 859 DI unit and give as much detail. Those shots of yours would make me feel great. Others have set the unit up to run a DI xducer as well and get good results. This may be something you could try if you are looking for better than you are getting.
I already had a DI unit before the 898 so if I'm looking for a DI of the structure I just turn that unit on.

I sure wouldn't be happy with the first one! You mentioned a chart speed of 8, I thought it was better to match the chart speed with the boat speed? Did you try a lower chart speed?
