I'm trying to wrap my head around the pulling vs pushing vs trolling terminology. Ant time I've fished with a boat moving forward with a bait behind the boat I've called it trolling. From what I've gathered in the crappie and striper world, it would be called pulling. Am I correct? Would you call using planer boards either with cranks or live bait "pulling" or "trolling"? I hope I'm not opening a can of worms here, I'm just trying to get it straight. Thanks!
Pushing is when you control your depth with a weight....we use 3 Oz. Pulling is when you do not use a weight and control depth by speed and length of line out. Trolling is what we call it when we spider rig.....but all three forms are a type of trolling...and longlining....you control depth by speed and length of line out also. Running crankbaits with planer boards is really pulling.....just got them out away from the boat.
Ok, what if I am using weights in front of a bait that is attached to a planer board? Is it still pulling? I thought pushing was having your rods in the front of the boat instead of out the back.
We do push from the front....but you could do it from the back. I have pulled from the front too....but if you have a weight to control depth...its called pushing....controlling depth with length of line out and no weight its called pulling. We push and pull sometimes at the same time.....speed 1.6 to 1.8 mph
I guess that would be pushing with a planer board lol....dunno....its all fishing though. If I had a couple planer boards I would try it though.Quote:
