Dragging Cranks at Logan Martin Round 2

Got on the water at 5:15 and fished the two sloughs above Goat Island. Caught two crappie in each slough. Must have been the day for Drum because I caught six today. Went down and fished the Civic Center slough and didn't catch a fish. Had to quit when the trolling batteries wouldn't push me over 1.0 mph. Wound up with (4) nice crappie, (6) Drum, and (7) Green Carp. I have to wonder if I should be out in the main channel dragging them deep. Can't seem to get over that (4) Crappie hump. Maybe they are out on the main channel ledges because they aren't up in the sloughs.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I would do what you said and try the river channel ledges. Guess I am too old and set in my ways to take on something new like that plus I cannot afford the expense of all that equipment. I'll just stick to my tried and true methods that I know and already have the stuff I need to do them. Fished Neely Henry today till 11:45 and caught 20 crappie on ledges from 14-20 feet deep. My usual spider rigging. Keep at it and let us know the progress.

Thanks for the encouragement Roger. If I could ever get that spider rigging going my way i might actually be a threat at the CRCC events.........hah. Gonna have to be out of town all next week on business so the crappie can relax for the next seven days. I'm anxious to see what BAMA S does with all of his new toys and knowledge on Martin.

Yea, this is a little frustrating figuring it out. But man the fish you do catch are nice quality fish! Keep it up and keep the great reports coming.

Keep on you are learning. I believe that the fishing here is different than in Miss. Our lakes are power generation and there are flood control much like the watershed lakes that we have. I believe our fish relate more to the river ledges, due to the current that we have,where theirs relate to flats. I have been spider rigging for over 25 years. and if you can catch them on the drops rigging then you can catch them cranking. The only problem will be loss of crank baits due to stumps. But it is still a lot of fun, and just another way to enjoy our sport. I do believe our fish are in their summer pattern and are not in transition, which makes it harder to locate them on flats because they are scattered. Keep us posted and I will do the same we will see if we all can get this thing figured out. Maybe Bama and some of the others will chime in and help us out. Scott have you pulled or pushed cranks during the spring or fall instead of long lining.

NO, I pretty much have stuck to the jigs during those periods due to less hang-ups when they get shallower. Normally stop with the cranks around October.

I have been doing real good pullin cranks for a few months. Though we differ in location I believe some of what I have found might help. Speed, depth, and bait colors are critical and change sometimes from day to day. If I find em in 17fow They will be scarce in 14 or 20. If they hit at 1.3 mph, the bite drops off if the wind slows me to 1.0, or quits blowing and I get up over 1.5. Cloud or sun asks for different colors also. Some days it's natural shad patterns, other days it's colors and they want em bright. It took me a while to figure out the waters I fish, and haven't tried others close by, but it's coming.
