rigging planer boards

Got a pair of sidewinder boards. They keep tripping so are unusable pulling bandits. Might have to go heavier line. Now 10 pound mono. Might try 17 or 14 so they bite better in the release. Looking at opti boards above. Where exactly does the line run? If you run just through the releases the board will obviously come off. Yellow birds don't use a release on the rear but a snap you run line thru. There is a eye screw shown on optics. Does line run thru it or just thru the split ring on the release. None of the videos show exactly what I am missing.

If you rig the board to slip back to the fish when hooked you use a snap swivel on the eye bolt so the line slips through it when you pop the line out of the front clip to reel in the fish. If you use the tattle flag, you have to remove the line from the rear clip to reel in the fish. The line isn't supposed to release from the rear clip with the tattle flag, only from the front clip when you pop it out. The clips have screws on them to adjust the tension on the line.

I'd like to know how to reel in a catfish (or any Large fish) on the outside board when you use three boards on each side of the boat. I've seen the shuffle method on The Next Bite website, but it says that only works when you have short lines out. Everybody shows using the boards on YouTube, but nobody shows reeling in the outside line across the other two.

Sure seems to be a lot of trouble so far.

If I were gonna fish this way I think I would go with the mast version instead of individual boards. Heck I am trying to learn to longline rite now, one thing at a time or I gets confused.

Wait untill you get a big catfish on the planer board and before you can get him in he tangles every line and rig you got out....Its a lot worse than when you don't use planer boards. The only advantage I can see in them is maybe when fishing clear water like Bay Springs ,to get your lines further from the boat.

I try to let a hooked fish take the board back behind all the other boards so I can steer it to the gap between all the other gear then bring it to the transom to the net. It takes some practice but can be done.

I hate catfish by the way!!

I just bought 5 Opti boards with the Tattle tell flags and was wondering the same thing. I won't get to try them out for another week or two, but am looking forward to playing with them. Maybe by then I can find out the best way to rig them and how to reel in fish without getting tangled up.
