I find myself more and more interested in gills and they are great eating. My Q is, after the big ones go off bed are you looking for them out at the first major drop with good structure or do they go out deeper off ledges or bluffs? What should the next move be to still take some nice gills for the freezer and how would you fish them out there?

Also check the downed trees. We get a good number of keepers off them when they leave the beds.
Thx guys. "Suspended over deeper water"...never would have thought about this. The downed timber would be easy to locate off the drops but finding suspended fish would something different as far as gills. Are you vertical jigging them or cast and count down? Guess that would depend on depth.
vertical for me all the time . but this year is different for some reason. they aren't where they go after the spawn. still trying to find the big crappie

If you will back out and cast to where you normally position the boat to fish the bank you will most likely find larger gills after the spawn .A lot of where I bream fish are silted in ponds with maybe a creek , but few if any ledges . :twocents
thx eagle 1, the place we go to is a lake with large flats, small and large creek channels with scattered ledges throughout the lake. Depth ranges out to about 40 some feet.. Going out in the morning and try some of the things brought up. hooking gills right now is not a problem but hooking good eaters like I see from many here is something I want to learn more about. may take some time to figure them out but if ya do...break out the white beans and hushpuppies :biggrin
