This is the Orange Kool-Aid - the first time I did them I had a piece of artic fox tail and it soaked up most of the color. These came out much better

This is the RIT Purple and still not as dark as I want but it will be a good color for two tones

so love to see the fox? I been doing so road kill extractions..lol want to try dying only thing hindering me is the whole rid deal vinegar and temp..and smell...love to see how it turned out? please

The ONLY dye mix I’ve put in the Microwave is the Kool-Aid/vinegar mix and the smell isn’t bad at all, I was worried about the same thing. All the instructions on the RIT site don’t call for any heat except the hot water https://www.ritstudio.com/techniques...ials/feathers/ Make sure you use a Ball Mason jar or a pyrex dish - they are made for heat and are okay in the microwave.

First make sure your feathers are clean and I listed the cleaning solution earlier. Make sure your feathers or fur are soaked in water and then a slight squeeze .

On the Kool-Aid use two packets, and water about 160 degrees, after you mix it up add 2 tablespoons of vinegar. Put your wet feathers in or your fur (lesson - do furs separate, they suck up all the color). Stir them and make sure they are immersed in the dye. I stir occasionally - when the mix cools off is when I put it in the microwave. Since it was the first time I did it for 1 minute - let it cool to warm then nuked it again for 45 seconds. I was being real careful as it was the first time I tried it and REALLY didn’t want to upset the head Lady!!!!

Instructions I’ve read say 2 minutes then cool but, a really good site that was suggested to me was http://www.dyeyouryarn.com/Kool-Aid-dyeing.html and it’s really good. One thing I’ve found is that I’ve never had the clear liquid at the end that they talk about in the instructions, but still getting good colors. They also talk about different food colorings and gel mix's which I found pretty cool!!!

There are also a lot of YouTube video’s on this. The only place right now that I know of with Flourescant color dyes is Veniards Fly Dye - a small tin costs about $15 dollars but based on YouTube video’s I’ve seen you don’t use more than half a teaspoon. I’m still a complete rookie at dyeing fur and feathers so if you come up with something that works better post on it.

WOW never thought that dying feathers or fur would be so interesting.
