Yes they should be identical and the same age. If you match a new heavy duty one with and older weaker one, it will deplete the older one quickly and you will get poor performance. Least that is what they told me when I was running 2 12 volts in my RV. Now that was in parallel but I would think you needed to match them regardless as to whether they are series or parallel if they are tied together.
On my boat I have one 12 volt for cranking and accessories and one dedicated to the TM(12V) so they don't have to be matched since they are independent of each other.

Not sure what kind of answer you'll get but I believe they should atleast be the same size and amp/hrs. It's also recommened that when one goes bad then both should be replaced as a brand new battery is only as good as the second one on a 24v. system.
Thanks guys will do
yup you right GBM change them all at same time bad one will kill the good one. when I owned heavy equipment some had 4 batt.in um -- old C pull pan had 6 when one went bad I changed um all. lot of $$ to start with but saved a lot of $$ in long run. main thing it done was crank the things up instead of going to store and buying new batts. every week or two change um all - last longer - have more fun and cheapest way to go just use same size and amp/hrs as GBM and B/B said. brand don't matter much because the same people make about all of um anyway just different names on um.
