Just bought this unit for my kayak. Anyone have a good starting point for recommended settings? Menus are a bit more complex than my HB 898, but this unit looks really nice when dialed in.

The out of the box settings are good to start out with. You probably want to be on the water and start playing with the menus there to get the best picture or scan you want. I use the 800 khz frequency and color green to see more detail. I can see fish and structure easily. Set your depth to get the best picture as well. If you look through the manual that came with it you can get some tips on how to navigate the menus easily also.
You can change the brightness, contrast and color easily as well to suit your eyes and sun. It is a simple unit and works well with the basic settings so just play around.
Thanks for the response, got a week off so will have plenty of time on the water to dial it in.
great little unit for the weekend warrior or just looking to put meat in the freezer . I have two on my 1542 war eagle . I pretty much use the defaults except I did set the shallow alarm and turned on the fish ID . Hard to see the dots with these old eyes .lol dicks sporting goods normal price is 99.00 Wall-Mart was 169.00:cheers2
With my Elite-5 DSI, I dropped a jig below the transducer and made the adjustments until I could see it on the screen.
