I recently bought a humminbird 598 and for the life of me I can not determine what is fish and what is not. Really the only thing I have been able to determine was a couple bait balls that i seen. I just cant tell difference between fish and what may be just clutter. Does anyone have a unit similar to this that can show me what I should be looking for while on DI and SI. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

If the unit is creating discernible images...we can help you pick out fish and other interesting stuff...
I suspect these are catfish because they are scattered and close to the bottom...

Asian carp because they are scattered and higher in the water column...(indicated by the shadow being carter away from the fish...(and I saw them scattering on the surface around my that day)...

Thanks that is just what i needed. Where i fish is a lot of brush and standing timber and they are hard for me to tell what is what.
1 thing that helps a lot in discerning the fish echoes is to pick a pallette color that has really good contrast between the fish echoes and the background...a white fish echo stands out against certain pallette colors depending on the ambient lighting conditions for that specific day...Quote:

Also choosing a shorter SI Range setting will allow the fish echoes to be larger on the display...
I rarely use a SI Range larger than 70' left and right...(unless I'm in new water looking for structure I don't already have marked)...
And that's on my 1197's 10.4" screen...
In a smaller display like the 598...I would rarely scan farther than 30-40' when looking specifically for fish echoes...
