We had 2 yaks out and managed to pick up 24 crappie and a bass. That's what we kept as there were gobs of throwbacks. The fish are spawning and shallow. A good mix of males and females. The only downer was the size was on the small size and ReelCajun got a busted rod with a big Chopique. All and all a perfect day with mild temps and not to bad a breeze. Anybody know what JB charges for the tip end half of his poles?
good report.....I have had several broken ones repaired but not from a fish breaking it....mine broke about 8" to a foot from the tip.....probably from closing a rod box lid on them.....I got one now that needs fixen'....he just spliced them together with a piece from another rod.....I asked how much and he said what ever you want to give me....usually $5 or $10.....amount depends on if I am spending $$ on other stuff.....Quote:

I tried the south end out of HWY 14 this after noon and it was muddy. Going to Streeters tomorrow and the roller ditches. Nice catch.

I don't know if any of ya'll know it, but J D is not doing well. By the way glad to hear you caught fish. I always find the later in the spawn, the small the fish.

I'm sorry, I thought that was a typo. You are referring to JB Salter. There is a older fellow in West Lake named JD that makes rods. Several people on this site know him. As for small fish, big fish. It has been my experience for years that the bigger fish spawn first. I find it true with bass and crappie. I always find that to be the case in these SW La. bayous. Not to say you won't catch a few big ones spawning now.
We probably missed the big fish spawn. Do the big ones use the same type spots as these small ones do? I wonder how long the bulk of the spawn lasts in SW LA. It's probably about over where I was with all the females near the nest.Quote:

Nice catch, did you fish towards Crowley or Mermentau? Finally got to knock the dust off of the old boat yesterday, put in at 90 and ran up that area. Water was much better than in the river. Kept 8 or 9, what was surprising was the amount of bass activity, we caught a few missed a couple of nice ones and they were chasing shad everywhere. Not often you see that much bass activity on the river, guess it's just the time of year.
