I was wondereing if anyone uses a fly rod for crappie fishing. I searched the site and found a little info from 2006. Thought I'd see if anyone had any recent info. I thoughtg it might be a lot of fun but wasn't sure what size rod or line wieght to use. Lots of info on 3wt to 7wt but nothing on rod size. I know a lot has to do with personal preference but thought I'd see what everyone is using or if anyone had any advise. Thanks.
i fish with a flyrod when i get the chance particularly in april when the fish get shallow, 5wt, 8 1/2 ft or 9ft is fine, don't have to have a sage z axis or anything real expensive. want a bit of backbone incase you get a bass on, I throw clousers in traditional Truman crappie colors. even a 6 wt wouldnt be bad as i tend to throw maribou jigs, clousers or "heavier" type waited flies.
ive caught big carp, bass, lotsa crappie, etc my son ad i get some funny looks on truman with those flyrods in the bass boat
I've thought about trying fly fishing for crappie, but wouldn't have a clue how to go about it....surely a sinking fly, but what about strike indicator? How deep to let it drop, etc. I have a relatively cheap combo I bought at Roger's Lures. Probably a 4 wt and a cheap reel, but that's all a guy really needs to get started.
I have not done it for crappie but have caught a ton of whites that way. I will tie up some 1/80 oz jigs. I just wince when they hit the rod.
i really just fish them when they are shallow on a floating line with light flies like 2" clousers in blue/blk, chart/blk, etc, that i tie . a lot of fun early in the year when everything in the lake is shallow(april/may). with all the timber and brush on truman, you could ruin a $60 floating line quickly...its just like anything else we do, just start experimenting. you could use an indicator with a 1/80 oz. maribou jig.... i just flit the smaller closers around in the shallowsQuote:

start with the 4 wt and see how it goes. its a lota fun and a break from all the other stuff we do
