The great thing about crappie fishing is that you can catch them on anything from a cane pole on up. I prefer sensitivity over back bone, 6lb test, and a reel with a good drag. There may be some setups that are the best for certain types of fishing, but you will probably find the most on here that have several different setups for different types of fishing.
I've used a ton of stuff over the years.
Now, my favorite is 11' two piece crappie pole with a Mitchell 310xE spinning reel. I've tried flourocarbon, mono, and lately braid. The Cabela's Ripcord SI Braid is good stuff, nothing like braid used to be. I hate that I can't bite it in two with my teeth, though!!! :) I'm a single pole fisherman.
Now you've heard from the two LOSERS (that's a great acronym here and you have to earn that!!!), you need to ignore us, and listen to the Pros. Not being funny. There are some really, really good crappie fishermen here, and I am not one of them.
Single and double pole fish with a pair of 11 foot HT panfish special pros with 6lb floro on HT intrigue ultralight reels. I got 4 pinnacle limit rods with HT optimax reels for my friends to use. Heard nothing but good about ozark rods may get a couple soon. HT makes fine rods no complaints.
Ozarks are pretty good. Get in touch with Conway for them. No complaints.
Like everyone said it depends on method. Some single pole minnows with cane poles to Graphite jig poles with jigs to small casting rods or mulitiple trolling rods for spider rigging.
My favorite just happens to be what most called verticle jigging with a couple Ozark 11' jig poles. I use Meatgetter Jigs or Umbrella tubes for verticle jigging cover. Many on here favor Ozark rods like me but most will differ on reels. I don't cast so as long as it holds line and has a drag in case I hook a big rough fish. Same goes for line. I favor 8 lb florocarbon Berkley Vanish , but there are as many options as opinions on here. lol
Whether your a cane pole minner dunker , serious jig fishermen or spider rigger welcome to the site.
How do you want to fish for them.
x2 cause if you like jiggin' like me, I like my 10' ozark rod with rear seat, and BnM has a new reel out this year bout the size of a 1/2 dollar (ban01)with a good drag and stainless bearings in it that is pretty dang neat. If youre into spider rigging, I don't know.
Ozark 14 ft trolling and 11 or 10 ft jigging rods all with pflueger reels for me. I run Mr Crappie clear 8 lb mono on both. That's some tough line for the money and well you just can't beat an Ozark rod.
