Does yours have an internal antenna? If so I think Hummingbird only guarantees it down to 2mph with out having external one.
Never heard the <2mph before, but fairly typical for a HB. I've got a HB on the front and it bounces most of the time as well, so I use the IP speed indicator and don't worry about it. It is frustrating tho.
I pilot cruise control handles mine, but never had trouble with a Humminbird. Mine fluctuates about a tenth of MPH.

It's probably due to the limitations that come with commercial gps units. At trolling speeds I would think the speedometer would have significant fluctuations as the GPS continues to update your position.
Is lowrance better on gps were getting a new depth finder for Driver, and we could put the HB597 with driver and new one up front for trolling.
