New truck

I know I am opening a can of worms by starting this tread, but I would like honest opinions especially anybody who might be in the industry. My wife and I have decided to buy a fifth wheel camper. The one we like is supposed to be 1/2 ton towable - it weighs around 7800 lbs dry. Currently we have a Tundra with the 5.7 motor and tow package which gives it a rating of about 10,000 lbs. Am I pushing my weight limit or do they rate trucks a little on the conservative side. Another option is to upgrade to a 3/4 ton, but I don't know what to look at. I love my Toyota and if I had to get another brand it would probably be Ford, Chevy, or Dodge in that order. What motors are available in those that would fit my needs. Gas or diesel? The truck would be to use everyday, not just for pulling the camper. Would like to hear any pro and cons you guys have.

if it rated 1/2 ton towable then you should be alright

I would stick with what you have. Unless you are wanting to really travel/tow long distances several times a year. I don't believe you will gain much going to a Chevy/Ford 3/4 ton over what you have now. I think I would give the Tundra a trial period and then decide. I hear there is a 5.0 Turbo Diesel engine coming for the Tundra. Suppose to be a similar version of the Cummings that Nissan put in the Titans. I am not a huge diesel fan for everyday driving but could be something to check into. We have several mechanics on here and also some diesel mechanics. They will be along to help you out. Congrats on a new camper. Just rent a spot at Bucksaw campground and leave it there for the season. We have a great time down there in the weekends.

Haven't pulled the trigger yet on the camper. Still in negotiations with the dealer. His idea of a good deal is a little different than mine. Plan on dragging it to Truman quite a bit now that I'm retired.

I would say you would be alright unless you get into some real hilly country which it might struggle a little bit.

how are you going to get the rv and the boat there. Igota 5th wheel last year, and I dont own a truck. rented aspot at campground 1/2 mile from closest ramp and parked it.

I'm a GM tech. for past 21 years so I'm partial to them But I don't think you will have a problem with the Tundra pulling that camper. Might install a good equalizer hitch. But other than that Tundra is good truck.

They dont make a equalizer hitch for a 5th wheel do they?

You would probably be ok, however once you add fuel, and your belongings your weight may add up quickly. I would also consider the places that you may be traveling as well ie… mountains or steep inclines. I have a 99 Cummins that doesn't have a problem pulling anything however once it gets COLD it a bit of a hassle.
