Santee 02/27/2014

Just a quick report, I made a short trip down to Santee on Thursday to check water conditions and activity. I long line trolled as my boat was still set up that way from the Greenwood tournament. I fished two different areas and caught fish in both. Didn't set the world on fire, but managed to put 12 in the boat. 6 were real nice fish of 1.75 or better, the other 6 were just keepers. The fish are not very aggressive, nor were they very plentiful in my chosen areas. The bites were light, and slow to pull the rods down, this leads me to believe that tight lining (slow Trolling) may have been the better option. Didn't take no pics, as all were released to fight again. Water levels seem to be on the rise, temps were mid 50's, winds were 5 to 10 out of the west south west. Better days should be on the horizon.

you hurt my feelings buddy. got a little time off next weekend and want to take a trip down to see what all the fuss is about. I have never been to santee and am trying to get all my chores done so i can get down there friday. i was planning on long lining only because it is my first trip and i can cover more ground and see what is what. u might have just changed my plans a little. oh well it will be time on different water anyway and that is always a good time

longlinining might be the ticket when get there , they change what they want at any time give it a try you might be surprised !!!

I agree with strmwalker, Santee, like all lakes is primed to bust loose at any given day. Just because the area I fished wasn't on fire doesn't mean another isn't. Santee is a huge lake, nearly 5 Greenwoods will fit within its banks. That limits you to the areas you choose to fish, as it's to far a boat ride to travel to the other end of the lake. Traditionally middle March is the beginning of prime time big fish fishing. I believe the snow and ice storm really slowed the fish migration down this year.

I understand the ice and snow has messed with the rhythm of quite a few things including myself. I am a high lineman and when u met me at greenwood I was coming off the roughest tenure of my career. I was dog tired and manning the back of the boat during that trip was wide open. But with the ice and snow hopefully behind us I just wanna fish. I missed last spring because we had a baby and I decided it was time to build my family a house. So as u can see I have a lot of CATCHING up to do

Jack's Creek, my wife swears by it. She grew up fishing Santee with her dad but says be careful Santee is dangerous if you don't know it. This time of year start at the mouth and troll in, you'll be shocked at the water depth and the amount of cover. Her dad has a four pounder caught there years ago, ona very windy February day.Good luck, please post about your trip.
