Wow! I think I'd contact the manufacturer on that one!
Did you get this fixed and get any explanation why it went out? I have a 2006 Etec 60 in the shop now and he thinks it is the EMM....around $1800 to fix. Ouch!
Yes and I suggest you find a Platinum Evinrude dealer. Between my phone calls to Evinrude and the Platinum dealer's calls we were able to get the computer replaced with a much lower cost than quoted at another "Evinrude" dealer which was supposedly the "Largest" in the south. Very pleased with Evinrude's effort to fix the problem and also to research the problem to see if further issues were at hand which were not. Simply just a computer that quit after 6 years of use. Everything has been great since. I can also tell you to find out exactly what part costs and labor hours they are charging you on the quote. Then call Evinrude directly and use their search of listed dealers in your area to call and get quotes. I was able to verify the RETAIL cost of the part and the recommended hours of labor. Promise you it was a lot less than the first dealer quoted. I had to drive 3 hours one way but was well worth the trip to be treated with respect and a eagerness to fix a problem the right way. The other so called Best dealer is 5 minutes from my home. Will never do business with that close to home dealer again for even a spark plug. Hope you find some one closer to you than I did. PM me if you want to talk more. Love my Etec and will be looking for one on my next boat.
Boy, thanks for the information. I will do some more research. They are still debating if it is the EMM. When I go to full throttle, the engine starts to bog and will not plane out. I thought I had some trash in the line or something but sounds like it could be the EMM. The dealer was suppose to be talking to Evinrude today but I did not hear back from him; will call tommorow.
Thanks again!!!!!
I am not saying the computer is not your problem, but from what I found out the computer is all or nothing. There may be an injector problem which is not uncommon on these motors. There was no indication of any problems when the computer blew on mine, no warning buzzers, no hesitation, no ruff idle, no bogging when gas applied. The main fuse will blow when there is an electrical problem on these motors, which saves the motor from further damage. I would imagine a mechanic would have looked at the fuel line from tank to motor for ethanol fatigue, but I would ask to be sure. I had mine replaced with last year's service to the supposedly new resistant Kevlar type line. I try to use ethanol free, but it isn't always available. Theses motors were supposed to be ethanol resistant, but the fuel lines are not Evinrude approved that come from the boat makers. The good thing with these motors is that when a knowledgeable tech hooks up the lap top the software they have quickly pin points the problems to help them trouble shoot more efficiently. Just my thoughts, and Google searches will open some reading on past problems others have had with any motor and you just have to do some reading through some bull and some useful info. Good luck cause it sucks when your at the mercy of greedy mechanics.
I have never had them work on my motor, Dan, but I have heard that same story from others. Glad you got it going!!
Dan, was that the Sports Center that was giving you the high price? I was just wondering because I use them and I want to know if I have to watch every cost associated with a fix. Please post the truth. There is nothing wrong with that, you are just posting the truth and your personal experiences. You might be saving somebody a lot of trouble. I am not much of a mechanic on boat motors so I depend on them to fix stuff but I would like to know if they have to be watched closely. Thanks, Wes
Yes. Don't know if something changed with them but they used to be reasonable on work to be done. They have serviced my boat and helped when I had questions on the phone. But a quote for a part that was $500+ over retail and 2 extra hours of labor at $95 an hour is ridiculous. I think the owner just stepped on his business if you know what I mean. Won't happen to me again. I like the guys in the shop and it's not their fault.
