Black Bayou in Holston La.

Does anyone now if you can get a jig down next to the cypress trees on Black Bayou or is the grass to thick year?

Come on down, Mike. The water's fine. SOme salvinia, but relatively no moss. Hopefully they'll start biting soon.

Thanks bayoumonster was thinking about going over tomorrow didn't now if they were doing anything. That sure is a good looking place it is a shame all that moss and salvinia is all over it in the summer. I guess it is like Black Lake and soon to be Caddo no body much cares they will have a little on the news now and again.

Hopefully the hydrilla will not be so bad this year since we got grass carp in the lake last year. However I look for the salvinia to be back with a vengence this summer. But, there is hope on the horizion for that eventually since they might have found cold tolerant salvinia weevils. I am gonna try and make it this next weekend myself. what we need is a grass carp that will eat salvinia.

You may not catch any crappie, but according to my dad the Bass fishermen are biting REALLY well on the bayou! :)

Charliee that is good to now it is hard to believe this day and time it is not a SAFE chemical that want eradicate the Sylvania.

The hard part of chemical control is getting the chemical applied to all the plants hidden in remote areas of the lake. I do think that chemicals will play an important part in controlling salvinia. I also think that weevils will be part of the control equation and hope they develop cold tolerant weevils. Since salvinia is such a widespread problem I feel that a lot of effort will be put into controlling it and hopefully this will be a promising one.

Growing up, the weevils destroyed many of our crops as well as our neighbors. Some weevils will invade stored grains and can be found in some packaged goods. Some weevils are structural pests because they invade homes in great numbers. The list continues............. As I had mentioned, I hope some serious thought by some educated, informed people are involved in this decision. Because once they are introduced, like so many other plants and animals we have seen, there is no turning back - just to make some fishermen happy.

Tracker, the weevils you refer to are different from the salvinia weevil. It is my understanding that salvinia weevils will eat only salvinia and die when there is no more salvinia for them to eat. I am familiar with the weevils you refer too and they get into everything grain related.
