Crappie showing up on my brush? Most is in 18-25 foot with the tops 7-12 foot under water. I ask because I have went several times in the past during what would be considered pre-spawn only to come up empty. It's usually around the middle to end of March when I start catching them and I know most years that a good number of crappie have already moved to the bank. It just seems like I would catch them on their way in too. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.
Wished I could advise you but I aint a brushpile fisherman. I did drop some bamboo when I used to night fish and I can tell ya that all brush wont hold fish. I dont know why 'cause I aint no fish but I thought I dropped all my brush in good places. Guess not. I'd recommend keep putting out brush and for the piles that do hold fish build those up more and more each year and let the ones that dont hold fish go and start new ones elsewhere.
I do just that . A new place gets one bucket and if it doesn't produce in a year no more. The good places get a fresh one every year. I now have a handful of good places and this year I have already made 5 new spots. No doubt they show up after spawning but before the spawn I don't do we'll. Got to get set up and learn trolling, long lining.
Judson, if you can get a few rod holders set up around your boat you can drift fish tightlining minnows any time outside of the spawn use your trolling motor to slow you down or pick up a couple of drift socks. Me and my fishing parts used to fill coolers that way. I guess I got away from drift fishing when the new techniques came about (spider rigging, longlining, etc.)
I have been putting brush in clark hill for the last 30 yrs. Since i started longlining i havent put out much brush for the last several yrs, But at the request of my 79 yr old father who loves to brush pile fish better than trolling i have put in a LOT of brush in the last several weeks. The best brush pile fishing has always been post spawn year in and out, I have caught some fish on brush pre spawn but have caught alot more after the spawn, Good luck
Hey Judson, I think I found some of your bamboo piles while striper fishing. They are nice but I don't fish brush piles. I am getting reports that people are catching some nice crappie off the banks in that area.
