Lcr-2/16/14
My icebreaker crunched away from the ramp this morning, but the wind was down and the main lake
was mostly free of ice.

I struck out at several spots before finding the first fish of the day. Predictably, it was the first of many of these:

Yes, that is a jig hanging out of its mouth. It was being pushed by a minnow.
Soon, a few crappie edged the chain gang out of the way long enough to get to my baits.
This was the first of two 13.5-inchers that tied for largest speck of the day.

The schools of crappie were small and keeping the boat on them was tough. They were holding in 17' to 19'
of water, suspended from 15' down to the bottom. Finally, near the end of the day I located a larger school.
By then boat control was very difficult. The wind was up to 15 with gusts into the mid-20s. (The NWS
forecast called for winds from 5 to 7 mph.) Whenever I got over them long enough, there were bites and
occasional hookups. In spite of the wind, I had a total of 20 (11 keepable size) for the day.
A couple of greenies and a few ringers rounded out the day's catch. One of the ringers went over 12"
and another was over 13".

Yes, they were fat & pretty. They're getting a pass until after they spawn, however. This lake has enough forage to sustain a larger perch population & I'd like to see lots more like this one.
