1984 60 hp Merc
Have a bad piston and it's going to cost $2500 to rebuild the motor . Several mechanics have said this is a common problem with this motor due to 3 cylinders and 2 carbs . Can anyone confirm this info from experience . We are thinking of switching to a newer year motor , used of course , perhaps even switching to Evinrude .
Any advice ? Newer motors are in the $2500 to $3500 neighborhood .
Thanks

I would say after all those years and just now failing I'd look at rebuild if you have been happy with it. Depends mainly on reputation of builder and warranty. Buying a used motor for that money and could have same problem.:twocents

The rebuild mechanic will give a 90 day warranty . I am thinking if I get a 2000 or newer ,it will be easier to find parts and maintain .
