I use willows, colorado's, indianna and swing blades. On a 1/8 with a 2 or 4 hook I'd use a 0 or 1 size blade. If you're using a larger hook which you can do with the old pony mold I'd bump it up to a size 2 blade. The blade chart in the Do-It catalouge is really good - you can go plus or minus one size and it doesn't seem to affect the action. For a real thumping blade I like the colorado's. Personnally I split the two as far as description. If they have a lead collar and barb for plastics it's a pony head, Roadrunners NO - we make horseheads no collar.
I like them both.
I have some #2 size willow leaf for my 1/8, but I mostly use 1/32 and for that on a Roadruner I use #0 for real Roadrunners and when I do a pony head 1/32 I go to a #1 which will also work on 1/32 pretty good as well. I do also use the Blakemore Imprinted Indina Blades as well depending on the color I am tying. I do also have some Colorado blades, but need to be careful as to not get one too big.
Gindog, I pour my own in 1/8 and 1/0 or 2/0 sickle hook. Most of the time use a #1 Colorado or Indiana in all styles. Use # 1 or 0 willow leaf. In warmer weather I will go to a #2 Colorado for extra thump. Don't cast them just use them as bottom hook on spider rig or pulling.
Do you'll jigs have the barb on them or are they barbless. I have both type of Do-it jigs but have not made any yet. I have some of both with and without barbs. I think I like the one with barb for plastic bait and with out for tying. I have not tied any so I not sure.
You got it!!
Mine have the barb because I fish mostly plastics. If I'm going to tie one I just cut the collar off behind the head with side cutter.
Don't care for the barb/collars. Have some Marabou2 heads which come with a collar and barb, not what I like.
We fish a lot of deep clear water(10-25 ft).We like 1/8 -3/16 oz # 2 hook (gold eagle claw) # 3 hammered willow leaf(1/8 oz)# 3.5 hammered willow leaf(3/16 oz) yes a big bait.We think the barb adds a little more weight and balances the bait (Pony head) a little better so what we call slow rolling the pony head!! Creekslick has some that really balances well.We can really slow it down to a crawl!!
