Keeping the colors and the length of it is difficult. Are there any of you with suggestions on consistency?

Do your jig heads have the collar still on them??? If so cut the collar off and it will be easier tying them, this will take some of the bulkiness out of th collar area.
Yes they do have a collar, I removed it on this one.

Much easier on the hackle install but, I knid of like the look of the fuller body on the first. I'm thinking I just need to practice on it more.
I second that, never want to tie over a collar unless it's a thread neck jig. Collars suck! Also know when you buy a 1/8 or 1/16 Oz head they will call it the same weight if it has a collar or not which clearly adding a collar makes them heavier. I hardly ever find jig head that weight what they say it does. I use a digital scale to check mine. Always off and that is because of the mold makers.
Practice makes a big difference and there no substitute for experience. Gary
One more thing, use Saddle Hackle for the collar and they will be better for this. Also don't need a lot of wraps.

Saddle Hackle is thinner which when wrapped will make a little shorter collar.
You can also use Hen hackle and pheasant. I like the patch of feathers right in front of the tail feathers. This is a link for Fly fish Ohio on a jig using the pheasant. You can tie this any size, and its a real nice pattern. It's a good tutorial also for how to tie these types of feathers in.
