Decent January day on Lake Cumberland

Having moved to the Lake Cumberland area about 6 months ago from the Ky Lake/Barkley Lake area, I was a bit concerned about leaving such prime crappie fishing lakes which I had enjoyed fishing all of my life. But, I can honestly say, I am having a ball fishing Lake Cumberland. Size for size, day in and day out, Lake Cumberland crappie may not match western Ky crappie on average, but Cumberland crappie are nothing to be sneezed at.

Yesterday I caught 29 Lake Cumberland crappie in about 4 hrs of fishing, keeping the best 16 fish and was very pleased with the size. The fish were caught off of brush in the Fishing Creek area anywhere from 6 ft to 29 ft deep. The biggest black crappie came from the shallowest depth, as is most often the case.

Having fished crappie tournaments over the big portion of the country in countless numbers of lakes, I've learned to take each lake for what it is worth, gleaning from it it's particular nuances and characteristics. While I'm just scratching the surface of this big Lake Cumberland, I'm happy to say I am enjoying it tremendously.....as well as enjoying the Somerset area and it's people. While I've considered retiring in a number of places (and even warmer climates) than this part of KY, I'm pretty sure now that Somerset and Lake Cumberland will be my home. Nice report kyfishman. Cumberland is intimidating in different ways than Ky.Bk Lakes. Deep and clear. Beautiful lake and an awesome fishery. If you ever get down to Burkesville ask Chuck at Strange Bait to show you the pics of monster crappie on Dale Hollow. Very big crappie. I really like the area with the rivers and lakes. A lot of fishing to chose from. Fished Cumberland river below Wolf Creek dam all the way to Celina ,Tn. many times. Fishing the jumps at Cumberland with 20 - 50 pound stripers is heart thumping. Actually haven't retired yet, kycreekboy. It will be another 3 or 4 years. I'm living and working in Somerset and having a blast fishing Lake Cumberland. I've fished for trout below Wolf Creek Dam for years, driving here from as far away as Paducah, but never made it out on the lake for crappie. I've also fished at Green River Lake for several years for crappie and I really enjoy fishign there, but there is so much of Lake Cumberland I want to explore, don't know when I'll get back to Green. But, ifish, I do plan to check out the crappie at Dale Hollow. I've seen some big ones that came from there. A guy in my neighbor goes there often, and he had some big black crappie back before Christmas from Dale Hollow that were truly awesome.

I live on Green rive and fish the lower end of Cumberland , lets go fishing.
