vice help

I been looking at some vices on e-bay. I know it not the best place to look but looking for something cheep. What some good names of vices on there that you've seen you like. Is there a big different in $20 and a $250 vice.

I would be interested in the best vice for a decent price also. Right now I am using a basic vise that came in a kit.

Check out the Mayfly2 on EBay. Then go to net and search for reviews. Seems to be a pretty good vice for the money. Made in MountainHome. Some early reviews said it was made overseas. He says it is now made in US. Some said you could call him and buy cheaper than on EBay.

You might check with Skip, he has the better ones. I have an el cheapo, so I don't know what advantages the better vices have. Hopefully some of the guys that have the better vices will chime in!

I use a regal myself but Pappa has bought the BP look a like and he absolutely loves it.

I use a Danvise Rotary. Its a composite built vise...not metal. I love it though. I do recommend the extension though. You can get it most anywhere. Its under $100. I bought it because of reviews. Holds multiple size hooks very well and rotary is adjustable, meaning how tight the rotation is...you can even lock it down. Its a clamp style which I like. I really just love it...although its been my only one. Check it out though.

Like Bobo said. Didn't think spending alot on a top notch vice when getting started was wise. The BP copy cost 60.00. I've been very happy with it. Very sturdy. Rotates, locks and you can adjust the angle to suit your needs. Very good first vise and I can't see replacing it any time soon.

Gindog - you'll find you get what you pay for in a vise. Imports are usually made with inferior materials - cheaper.

Sky Pilot - the vise that Cray mentioned is a fantastic vise for the price - great entry level rotary vise - and it's made an America. Only drawback I saw was the hook range (2-24). I don't use rotary because with my style of tying - it's not needed.

Like Bobo, we tye on Regals. Toughest vise out there and I've tyed on over a 100 vises. The new stainless steel head is terrific and kid friendly.

If you don't need a rotary Peak makes the same basic vise as their rotary that is fixed and it's under $100 I think, but sice I have never bought one I am not sure. Peak makes a great vise. Danvise is what I started on and tied on it for one year before buying my Renzetti which is also a fantastic vise, but my Salt Water Traveler is over $200 even when I bought it something like 8 or 9 years ago. The I saw the Nor and had to have it and is what I still Ty on today. I still have my Renzetti Salt Water Traveler and 2 Nor Vises and I did also have a Peak, but someone talked me out of it.

Bobo posted my link to the vise review that was really a great resource. IMHO, I would buy some new upstart off of eBay or any place else. Heck if you don't want a rotary and don't want to spend a ton, buy the old AA or most any good name vise, like Regal or even a lower end Griffin.

If at all possible go to a fly sh near you and put your hands on some vises to see how they function with you. I don't live near a fly shop at all, but most large cities have at least one so go to one and you don't have to buy from them, just get a feel for a vise and the type you may want. BPS or Cabelas also have plenty to look at.

i usually don't reply to anyone asking about a cheap vise like I use to because that is what they will most likely get and not be happy with it. Just my 2 cents, if you need the money bad enough to buy a cheap vise, it's cheaper to buy jigs!
