Saturday-Burnt Mills-40 10" crappie
I decided to try Burnt Mills as this time last year I did really well for numbers in a spot I found way up in the stump field. Well, today it yielded two crappie. A year ago temps were in the 20's and today in the 70's so a bit different in that respect. I spent most of the morning in the stump field and was still sitting on 2 crappie around noon when I moved back out to the main lake. I found the crappie where I have found them in past winters, on the bottom in water around 27' deep. Oddly, of the 40 I caught I think I only got two casting. They wanted the jig held in front of their face and I got most on a chartreuse/pearl wasshoppah tipped with a chartreuse crappie nibble. They were all almost identical in size. Oh well, that's been Burnt Mills for me lately.
Lake is down just over a foot and the ramp is a slight challenge now.
If you are not used to catching crappie from deep water and you just throw them back after pulling them up from deep down they will just float on the surface especially if they are smaller. What works for me is forcing them to close their mouth, pinching their gills together, and throwing them in the water like a dart. If they open their mouth during this process they will end up back on the surface.
I showed surface water temp around 46.
