:scratchheadWhy do we have to strip ALL the line off when we respool? If I were long lining I could maybe see it, but 99% of the time there is less than 20 yards of line off my reel. I am about to respool with some Hi Vis line and was thinking of leaving 50 yards of old line on and tying 50 yards of new line to it (Uni Knot or Blood Knot) Just seems like a lot of wasted line to put on for a full spool of brand new line. If I were to hook into something that pulled out 90 yards of 4# test I highly doubt I would get it in anyway. I like a full spool just wish there was a way to take up that un needed space.

Several people do that... Some do it a lot with fireline or braid since some are costly

never remove all my line. It's easier to tie onto line than around the spool anyway.

Same here.

I started doing the same. I used to strip it off 1 reel then reel the string off another reel until I did all the ones I wanted. This left me with only 1 reel to put on new string. The next time I would redo them with new string. As I got older that became a hassle remembering when to change all the string, so now I just replace about half. I just strip it until I find the knot.

Been doing it this way for years on all my reels. Fill about half full of cheap line, tie on good line. Then when you want to change out like dpisani says strip to knot and cut off.

The ole Blood Knot has saved a lot of line. For me. Now if my eyes will hold up long enough to actually see to re-spool my rods tomorrow. Cause it's supposed to be raining and reading this post has reminded me to do it.

I have a base of mono, and then a little father than I can cast I use power pro.

I do it ...I even turn the superline around when it starts to fray or loose color.

I usually replace all of my mono cuz I get broke off enough to get way down in the spool sometimes. The super line that I buy, the smaller spools of about 110 yds or so, I divide into 3 pieces and set it up on a mono base, and haven't worn out any super line yet. I use a 10lb mono or flouro leader just to make re-tying easier. Blood knot or the easier to tie double uni joins the lines.
