LSU Lakes

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the site and pretty new to crappie fishing. I was thinking about bringing my daughter to the LSU lakes this weekend. Are there any fish out there? If so, what bait should I use this time of year?

:welcome Peavley.......actually, those lakes once held the state record for largest largemouth bass.....I would use crickets and worms.....there are crappie there but I have not seen any big ones.....good luck and post some pictures of your adventure......

Welcome! There use to be a guy on here that posted pictures of his catch from those lake regularlly. Don't recall his username. I would try jigs for crappie this time of year. Blk and chrt is always a good bet.

They still have catfish. I think the bass Bruce talked about is still top 10. Caught on a plastic worm from the bank. I used to paddle around in the lakes years ago and caught a few bass. And welcome!

I'd hit Crest Lake first. Fish the North end and cast a jig on a slip cork 4'-6' down.Out in the middle. It's no secret that the sacs stack up there. The colder the better.

Jig Rig is right. Crest is definitely the best crappie spot of the 5 LSU lakes. Second best is Parker Lake, near Parker Drive. Another good spot is near the drain pipes between City Park Lake (which is under I-10) and the larger University Lake.

Otherwise, that's it. The bigger lakes are in poor shape. They wet-dredged them back in the 80s and for about 10-15 years the fishing was terrific for bass, chiquapin and even crappie. But they never addressed the real issues which were sedimentation and organic pollution. Just as bad, they later removed all the structure. They still stock City Park and University lakes each year with bass. But with no cover and no deep water, the pelicans and cormorants wipe them out.

In BR, another good spot to try for crappie is the BREC pond at Burbank. I've caught some real nice sacalait there on fly rod.
