Through the Ice
With all of this early season cold weather, I was wondering if anyone fished for crappie through the ice in any of the Lk Ontario bays like Sodus Bay or Port Bay? I caught some huge bass while ice fishing Sodus Bay a few years ago, but never caught a crappie.

I don't ice fish anymore but I have some friends that do real well through the ice on crappie. some times they are only a foot or two under the ice

I will remember that. Thanks.

I was raised in Rochester, (Gates). I haven't fished crappie in NY in over 40 years, but when I was a kid we used to go to Henderson Harbor, well back into the harbor, when the ice got thick enough, and we caught some of the biggest crappie. I believe that the locals called them strawberry bass; never heard that term except around Lake Ontario. In the summer, we also caught huge small mouth bass using soft shell crabs. I now fish crappie every chance I get here in eastern NC, but not through any ice. I was out last Friday and it was 78 degrees, water Temp. was 50. We have had some cold weather lately, in the upper 20's, but normally days are in the upper 40's, or higher; I can live with that, but upstate NY winters are too much.
I wish you good luck on the crappie. If you ever travel south on I-95, give me a holler, and I'll take you out for some cypress creek crappie fishing; you may even get to see an alligator up close. B-

We have had January temps here since before Thanksgiving! 78 degrees seems like a dream! I retire in three years and don't know if I will stay in the land of the ice and snow or not. My plans are to fish, play my guitar, and cook up some good eats! Southern PA looks nice. I remember going through the middle of NC but not in a good many years. Just hope to end up somewhere where the fishing is good and the neighbors are friendly!
Take care and tight lines!

We catch a lot of Crappie on the Raquette Rive in Colton NY, there is one bay that is loaded with them in the winter time.

It has been a heck of a winter, and Ive been on the ice almost every weekend. I havent been targeting them, but have been hitting perch like there's no tomorrow. In the past years Ive hit them pretty good. Im in the NY, Dutchess County area.

I have a friend south of Raleigh. My wife and I plan to come check out NC for out retirement getaway. I already told her we have to stay by a lake with plenty of fish.
