Saturday-NWR-64 crappie

I decided to try something different and headed out to the NWR (Northwest River) for the first time since September and only my 5th time this year. Early on I could only catch them vertical jigging a chartreuse/pearl wasshoppah. No bites casting so I switched up to long lining and that was the solution. They liked Blue Ice and Cajun Cricket BGBS. The trick was to stay in water around 12' deep and fish 9' deep. Most were caught in the same general area and if anyone cares to know where, just send me a pm and I will be glad to tell you. I had 5 that were 11" with the biggest weighing 14oz, maybe a dozen that were 10", quite a few around 9" and a lot of little 7"ers. No complaints as I did a lot better than I had expected. I showed surface water temp was 43-45.

That's a good day for NW, looks like the water is cooling off fast!

That sounds like fun. I've never been able to get a 1/16 jig down past about 5 foot. What do you do to get down so deep (9')?

A nice long cast while trolling around .8 mph will get a 1/16oz jig down to around 9'.

I also just realized that numbers wise this was my second best day ever on that river. (I had caught 66 on 10-9-2010.)

Nice catch,didn't,t know the water had cool down that much,sounds like the next time I get to go it will be winter time style fishing,hope it won,t be too long.

Large parts of this river are less than 10' and I think that contributes to it being so cold. Other bodies of water in this area that have deeper water are not as cold.

I also forgot to mention that the river is down as low as I have ever seen it, at least 2'. I was somewhat nervous retrieving my boat as the ramp really drops off sharply now.

I was thinking about ring perch today. Thay cooling water makes me get excited about ringers coming up. I know you are a purist and I appreciate that......leaves more perch for me.

I didn't catch a single one of them. The only inferior species I caught were 2 warmouth and 2 bowfin.
