do you folks use anything special when targeting channel cats?
I use whisker seekers.... They are awesome! check them out at Catfish Tackle | Catfish Lures | Catfish Gear - Whisker Seeker Tackle
They are going to have a big sale on Monday so don't hesitate.
I love to troll or drift for cats and if you look at my website you will see why.
Good luck with what ever you decide.
i was looking for input more along the lines of rods and reels.
I see.... They will have rods coming out soon.
?????????
Did you look at the website I posted? Whisker seeker tackle..
It would depend I think on where and how you are fishing. I'm a bait caster guy so I prefer 6 1/2 ft med action rod with decent reel, 12-14 lb line. I prefer braid but any good mono will work. Same set up with good spinning reel set up same way will work. Just what ever you are comfortable with using. Might want to go a little heavier if fishing in rivers or creeks and around heavy brush.
cray, i go with pretty much the same. abu 5500c reels and 6.5 med. action rods. i've considered going heavier, but the biggest cat i've taken from our local lakes was only about 30 inches, so i think i am armed okay.
tdh, i am not looking to buy anything as i have more than enough gear. i was just wondering what others used also.
I personally use a very light action rod, an old 7.5 ft browning rod from the 80's and a quantum round baitcast reel, with 65lb braid. I normally use a CJ's slipcork and CJ's punch bait on a treble hook, if you don't get a bite in 20 minutes the fish ain't there. I use the braid and a slip cork because my home lake is very rocky and if your line sinks, you're gonna get hung up 9 times out of 10.
When I fish one of the sandier areas I use 9.5 ft downrigger rods to cast far from the bank if need be (if my friends who have boats are busy), with some of my surf/trolling reels and a big hunk of whatever bait I can get on a Carolina rig with 5/0 to 8/0 circle hook. The rods are only 30$ and they have a really fast tip so they work very well with circle hooks. The reason for the heavier tackle is because there are some very large blue cats in my area.
Here we use same baitcasters and rods with about 12 to 14 lb line used for Bass fishing. If your not comfortable with baitcasters , Zebco 33 or Omegas will do fine. Check out my guide trips last summer here using light tackle.
