One of my favorite weekends of the year......to go FISHING!!!! Haven't decided where to head, Milford...Wilson...or maybe Glen. Anybody else fishing instead of hunting?
I fish, I put the shotgun down a few years back. My replacement does just fine, good enough for both of us, IMO. Seems there used to a jackpot buddy thing at Wilson some time ago. Is it still going? Anybody game for one?? Milford, Wilson, Marion, anywhere, anybody. Make a post if you might want to.
Despite the poor bird numbers, we're going to Dodge City to hunt with a big group. Probably wont shoot many, but will be a good time regardless.
I'm thinking I may hit Kanopolis or the Glen on Saturday. Not 100 percent sure yet, but that is my intention :-)
I've fished this weekend for the last 20+ years, when the weather has cooperated. I have never been one to chase pheasants, big geese was another story though. Anyway, looks like I might head to Wilson if the wind will stay down. Been pickin up bits of info on the walleys the last week or so. If the wind doesn't work maybe Milford. Some dandys' being caught over there from what I'm hearing too.
Two years ago Dodge was tough. Last year was.... depressing. I felt so bad for the people and animals trying to keep it together through this awful drought. I think my trip there this year will be short and sweet. I know they did a little better on rain this year, so hopefully the habitat will bounce back and the birds will follow suit in the coming years.Quote:

The habitat was outstanding!!! Some of the best crp I've ever seen. We also walked an irrigated milo field that had stubble about waist high. When they cut it they had chopped the heads off, for silage I assume, and left them laying on the ground. We saw 5 birds in that field. It was a group of about 20 people and we killed 24 pheasants and 2 quail on the weekend. Really disappointing but we still had a great time. Hopefully they get a little rain this spring to help things bounce back. The winter wheat is really looking good right now, so much so that they're already grazing cattle in it.Quote:

Sort of a sad time for me. This is the first season without my buddy, Ike. Ike and I hunted Kansas and the Oklahoma panhandle hard for 15 years. Plus, a little of Iowa and Missouri. He passed away in Jan this year. He had arthritis (like me) and was about deaf (like me.) But he hunted hard up to the last (better than me.) I lived in northeast Kansas when I drove to Wisconsin to pick him up as a pup. He was my buddy.

I'm glad you found a few birds! I imagine you probably did better than most last weekend. Did you see many other hunters? The only downside to the boom of a few years ago was the number of hunters, especially road hunters, seemed to be way up. Last year we hardly saw anybody, but only killed one bird between two guys for the weekend.:dono We saw a few more, but they were getting up 100+ yards away when we stepped out of the truck.Quote:
