What does it mean when the depth is blinking and changing every few seconds. It goes from like 16 ft to 9 ft to 14 ft to 6 ft, etc. I think its the 998 model. I am starting to think its got something to do with battery connection.

Check your volts, one of the screens will show it. Maybe the ducer.
got the latest updates installed?
No. Heck I don't even really know how to use the thing. I read/scanned thru the manuel and that's it. A buddy gave it to me to use and figure it out. Its only around 6 months old so would there be updates already? Im not sure if its a 998 either, I just threw that out there. I know it has SI and DI. All I am wanting at this point is the sonar but like I said the depth is all over the place. It had a cig plug that was on it but I could not get it to turn on when in my boat. I took the plug off and now I am running it strait to a 12 volt battery with nothing else hooked up to it. It comes on now atleast. If someone knows a lot about these things I will be more than happy to take you fishing and in return you can show me how to work it.
i could buy a unit today and it may not have the last 3 updates on it. From what I have seen installing updates fixes most problems like your having as well as your power connection--it has to be good--so doing the updates along with what you fixed with the power you would be good to go (least that's been my experience)
I knew it something 98. its a 798.

go into the settings and turn the battery alarm off !!! you also said that you have it going straight to a 12 volt battery you need a inline fuse 3 amp will work !!!and what KDAVID1 said about updates , which I am one that will not update if I don't have to cause sometimes you cause more problems updating !!!! also it would not hurt to get a Ferrite EMI Suppression Core to eliminate noise interference !!!
Mine does that when I'm running down the lake and can't fix bottom
