trolling motor di or si
OK, I am wanting to upgrade my bow depth finder. I have a terrova ipilot and and 898 si (non HD) on the console with a lakemaster card. Is it worth the extra money for si on the trolling motor. I want to be able to link everything up and be able to to use follow the contour from up front. To be honest I dont really use the si on the console as much as I should because I spend 90% of my time up front. Do you think I would use the si more on troller if I had it. Last but not least there is a 150 rebate on 858c right now for bass pro, gander. cabelas, so is the extra money worth it for a 900 series. I have always said go bigger but on just di will it make that much difference thanks.

Just personal preference here, but it only wanted DI on the TM because every time you turn your TM it's going to mess the pic up! I am sure some do put SI up front, but I like DI better for the reason above plus I like the DI more for seeing fish better or at least I think you see fish better in DI than SI even though you can see fish on SI, just not as good.

clfarms1, i have the 858 hd di on the troller and love it! make sure you get the hd if you get one! or you will be fighting to see the sceen when the sun gets high in the sky! si was a flop on the troller for me....

I have 898 si on the front and i love it. You can turn the head right or left with si and now you have 360 without paying another $2000

SI is valuable on the TM for finding new structure out to the sides of the boat during trolling, spider riggin, or moving between "known spots" for jiggin, casting, dock shooting, etc...
DI is valuable for passing over those "known spots" to see what the structure really looks like or for discerning fish echoes from the branches of the brush...or looking down into stakebeds to see if any fish are home...
SI can be used on the TM effectively...one just has to realize that turning the TM quickly can cause the image to skew somewhat...
DI can even skew the image if the TM is turned quickly...it's just not as noticable as in SI ...(because SI has such a wider slice side to side)...

I think it depends on your fishing technique on which is best for you. Rickie sums it up nicely on what each does for you.
I have an 898 up front. I have it on SI when I'm up front pushing and when I'm up front pulling ( I mostly pull jigs and cranks from the back of the boat but whenever I have extra people with me, I put them on the back and I fish from the front ). Whenever I see "stuff", I'll maneuver the boat that direction to get my baits in the "stuff".
One thing to remember, you don't have to have a pretty picture to find fish.
